Fashion photographer David LaChapelle may not be currently shooting editorial spreads for magazines, but he still brings elegance and glamour to life through art. After photographing celebrities from Madonna to Leonardo DiCaprio, LaChapelle has switched his creative focus to canvas. His latest piece, “The Rape of Africa,” is included in a solo exhibition at Paul Kinsman Gallery, which opens tonight, July 13, and runs through September 18, 2010.
Inspired by Botticelli’s “Venus and Mars” circa 1484, “The Rape of Africa” depicts the stunning supermodel Naomi Campbell as Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Draped in a lilac robe and gold bangles, Venus is accompanied by a fatigued Mars, the vengeful god of war. A clash between the historic elements of love, beauty and battle are illustrated with modern day figures. Painting along the lines of his hero, Andy Warhol, LaChapelle combines bold color and symbolism to create a powerful pop-culture piece.
